PMB 45/80

Polymer Modified Bitumen PMB 45/80 for Africa

PMB 45/80 for Africa is a polymer-modified bitumen grade used in road projects that require a balance of deformation resistance and workability. Under the EN 14023 framework, PMB 45/80 has a nominal penetration range of 45 to 80 (0.1 mm) at 25 °C. The complete grade designation also determines the applicable softening-point class and declared performance properties.

Polymer modification can improve resistance to permanent deformation and fatigue cracking, depending on the formulation and specified grade. As a result, PMB 45/80 may suit wearing-course and heavy-traffic asphalt applications when it meets the project’s requirements. Tiger Bitumen, a brand owned by HY International Group, supplies PMB 45/80 to paving projects across Africa according to the applicable project specification.

Tiger Brand Polymer Modified Bitumen 45/80 Specifications

Polymer Modified Bitumen 45/80
Property Specifications Test Method
Penetration @ 25 °C (0.1 mm) 45-80 EN 1426
The 45/80 designation defines the nominal penetration range. The softening point and other declared performance properties depend on the complete EN 14023 designation selected for the project. The applicable values are provided in the PMB 45/80 Technical Data Sheet and shipment-specific Certificate of Analysis.

Key Benefits of PMB 45/80

Depending on the formulation and complete grade designation, PMB 45/80 can offer the following benefits:

  • Rutting resistance: Polymer modification can improve resistance to permanent deformation in wheel paths.
  • Fatigue resistance: The modified binder can help resist fatigue cracking under repeated traffic loading.
  • Workability: The selected grade can provide the balance of flexibility and handling properties required by the asphalt mix.

However, actual performance depends on the binder formulation, complete designation, mix design and project conditions.

Applications of PMB 45/80

Project specifications may select PMB 45/80 for several asphalt applications, including:

  • General road wearing-course mixtures.
  • Highway asphalt carrying heavy traffic.
  • Other paved infrastructure that requires rutting and fatigue resistance alongside suitable workability.

Before choosing this grade, confirm that its complete designation meets the required performance criteria and project specification.

Understanding the EN 14023 Designation

PMB 45/80 identifies a nominal penetration range, rather than the complete EN 14023 designation. The full designation also specifies the minimum softening-point class and any other required performance properties.

Therefore, confirm the full designation before placing an order. Tiger Bitumen reviews the applicable grade requirements during the quotation process.

PMB 45/80 vs PMB 40/100

PMB 45/80 and PMB 40/100 have different nominal penetration ranges, although the ranges overlap. PMB 45/80 covers 45 to 80, whereas PMB 40/100 covers 40 to 100. Always order the grade specified for your project.

For comparison, see PMB 25/55 for a different nominal penetration range. If your project requires an unmodified paving binder, explore Bitumen 50/70. You can also browse our Polymer Modified Bitumen range to compare available PMB grades.

Packing, Shipping and Quality Documents

Tiger Bitumen primarily ships PMB 45/80 in new steel drums. For projects that require bag packing, 1 metric ton (1,000 kg) PP woven bags in a steel cage may also be available, subject to confirmation for the specified grade and order.

Our packing facility is located in the Karachi Export Processing Zone, near Port Qasim and Karachi Port. From there, we arrange container exports to African ports according to the order requirements.

Each order includes a grade-specific Technical Data Sheet and a shipment-specific Certificate of Analysis. Buyers can also arrange SGS or Bureau Veritas inspection on request, subject to agreement. For packing details, see our Bitumen Drum Packing page.
